DC vs. Marvel 30th Anniversary Retrospective

Hello comic fans everywhere! I hope you’re all doing well and having a great 2026 so far. Today’s article finds us celebrating the 30th anniversary of one of the most iconic crossovers in comic book history. Yes, we’re going to go back 30 years and discuss what made this crossover so special and why it still resonates today. To be completely transparent, at this time in 1996, I was NOT a comic book fan and had no idea something like this was even going on! About 4 years later in 2000, is when I started getting into and exploring the world of comics, and this is when I happened upon this crossover and bought all 4 issues. I loved it and then come to find out that there were also issues of “amalgamated” characters, I was completely in on it! So, let’s get into this crossover and re-kindle that nostalgia from 30 years ago!

OVERVIEW AND FEATURES

The DC vs Marvel crossover ran from February through May of 1996. It spotlighted a total of 4 issues, with each company publishing 2 issues. The stripped down version of the plot is this: Two cosmic brothers, each having a personality from each universe, pit the heroes of their respective universe in a series of battles. The stakes being that the losing universe would cease to exist.

One of the key elements that made this crossover special was that the DC and Marvel let the readers get in on who won some of the character battles. Fans could vote through ballots, making them feel directly involved with the storyline.

The series featured 11 major battles which showcased the strengths and abilities of the characters. Some of which lead to surprising outcomes based on fan votes. 6 battles were determined by the miniseries’ creative team, and 5 battles were determined by the fans. SPOILERS AHEAD!!! I’ll give the winners of each battle, but to find out how they win, go read the issues!

CREATIVE TEAM BATTLES:

Aquaman vs. Namor: WINNER-AQUAMAN

Elektra vs. Catwoman: WINNER-ELEKTRA

Flash vs. Quicksilver: WINNER-FLASH

Robin vs. Jubilee: WINNER-ROBIN

Silver Surfer vs. Green Lanter: WINNER-SILVER SURFER

FAN BATTLES:

Superman vs. Hulk: WINNER-SUPERMAN

Spider-Man vs. Superboy: WINNER-SPIDER-MAN

Batman vs. Captain America: WINNER-BATMAN

Wolverine vs. Lobo: WINNER-WOLVERINE

Storm vs. Wonder Woman: WINNER-STORM

Although some of the winners were not what everyone expected or wanted, the impact of the series entertained fans and spotlighted the rivalry between the 2 comic giants. Ultimately bringing together characters that the fans had long debated about who win in a fight!

IMPORTANCE OF THE CROSSOVER

The importance of this epic crossover was key for several reasons. To me the most important reason is letting the fans get involved. It evoked a sense of community and engagement that made them feel as active participants in the decision-making process. Second, it marked a historical collaboration between two giant comic book publishers mostly seen as huge competitors in the business. This pushed the precedent forward for future collaborations in the comic book industry. Lastly, it leaves a legacy and a lasting impression among fans and is referenced in discussions to this day.

Other things came out of this venture as well. As I mentioned earlier, a set of “amalgamated” comic issues came out of this. These were issues that combined a character from DC and a character from Marvel. There were characters such as Dark Claw, a version of Batman and Wolverine combined. Iron Lantern, Iron Man and Green Lantern as one. And Super Soldier, Superman and Captain America. There was also at least one set of DC vs Marvel trading cards to come out of this from SkyBox. This set featured other battles between characters that were not in the comics.

I hope you enjoyed this article! It was fun going back and researching this historic crossover from 3 decades ago! I usually go back and read the 4 issue series at least once a year. Have a good one everybody! – KEN
